Directed by Peter Jackson and based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy of epic fantasy films — The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, the films follow the hobbit Frodo Baggins as he and eight companions embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring and defeat its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron.
Mounted on an epic scale, the films are noted for their thrilling battle scenes, rich musical scores, and revolutionary use of special effects. Together, the trilogy won 17 Academy Awards — including Best Picture for The Return of the King — and remains one of the highest-grossing film trilogies of all time, with a combined worldwide box office of nearly $3 billion.
