Set in the 1930s, after the events of Downton Abbey: A New Era, the Crawley family is enjoying time in London. Lord (Hugh Bonneville) and Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern), along with their daughters Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Edith (Laura Carmichael), take in a theatrical production in the West End that stars Guy Dexter (Dominic West), who last shot a film in their home. Backstage, they greet Thomas Barrow (Robert James-Collier), who now works for Dexter as his assistant.
Mary has suffered a scandal that makes the headlines. As the rest of the family makes their way back to Downton Abbey, Mary waits in London with her lady's maid, Anna (Joanne Froggat) at Grantham House for her Uncle Harold (Paul Giamatti). However, Harold shows up with an unexpected friend and financial advisor, who brings bad news that will affect the future of Downton Abbey.
